Dell EMC VxBlock™ System 1000 Architecture Overview

This document describes the high-level design of the VxBlock System 1000 and the hardware and software components.

The VxBlock 1000 offers the latest storage arrays, compute, and networking equipment from Cisco Systems and the AMP-VXor AMP-3S management infrastructure. The following list explains the benefits of the VxBlock 1000:

  • Customization: The VxBlock 1000 allows a choice of multiple storage arrays, compute servers, and network stacks. The compute layer includes both Cisco UCS B-Series and C-Series Servers. The storage layer includes multi-array support from VMAX All Flash, Dell EMC Unity, PowerMax, XtremIO, and Isilon storage to fulfill both block and file storage needs. Networking options include:
    • LAN networking supports 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, and 100 Gb/s uplinks to the network. LAN networking supports 10 Gb/s, 25 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, and 100 Gb/s access for attached devices, depending on the configuration.
    • SAN networking supports 16 Gb/s FC access from both the compute and storage arrays.
  • Scalability and expansion: The VxBlock 1000 can be expanded by adding compute, network, and storage resources. After the initial deployment, you can add additional disks for increased capacity and servers for increased performance.
  • AMP-VX: The AMP-VX management infrastructure is also scalable and can be deployed inside the VxBlock System 1000 or as a standalone appliance. The AMP-VX can manage multiple system platforms in a single data center. As the VxBlock 1000 is expanded with new components, the AMP-VX recognizes those components for management.

  • AMP-3S: The AMP-3S is a single system management infrastructure platform designed to manage a single platform in a data center. It scales from two to six servers using a Dell EMC Unity 300 array for iSCSI storage. If AMP-3S is used, Converged System data protection software is installed on a compute blade in the VxBlock 1000.
