Measuring the bi-directional bandwidth between VMware ESXi hosts in the VxFlex node

Use Iperf to measure the maximum possible bandwidth between VMware ESXi hosts in the VxFlex node.

About this task

Iperf is a component of the VMware vSphere Virtual SAN Health Check Plugin.

Procedure

  1. Type the following to disable the firewall on all VMware ESXi hosts.
    esxcli network firewall set --enabled false
  2. Type the following to create a copy of Iperf in the same directory in each host:
    cp usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperf3 /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/iperfcopy
  3. Type the following to use the copy of Iperf as a server:
    ./iperf3 –s Hostname
  4. Type the following to use the copy of Iperf as a client on another server:
    ./iperf3 –c Hostname
  5. Type the following to test traffic in both directions:
    ./iperf –c Hostname -d
  6. Repeat these steps for each of the hosts.
  7. When you are finished, type the following to enable the firewall on all VMware ESXi hosts:
    esxcli network firewall set --enabled true
