VxFlex integrated rack deployment options

VxFlex integrated rack has several options for deployment.

VxFlex OS runs on VxFlex integrated rack nodes to operate the storage and tie in workloads. VxFlex OS has three components:

  • Storage data client (SDC): Consumes storage from the VxFlex integrated rack
  • Storage data server (SDS): Contributes node storage to VxFlex integrated rack
  • Metadata manager (MDM): Manages the storage blocks and tracks data location across the system

VxFlex OS enables flexible deployment options by allowing the separation of SDC and SDS components. It addresses data center workload requirements through the following VxFlex integrated rack deployment options:

Deployment type Description
Full hyperconverged

Consists of VxFlex hyperconverged nodes, which contribute both compute and storage resources to the virtual environment.

Front-end (application) and back-end (storage) traffic share the same VxFlex OS data networks. This includes VxFlex hyperconverged nodes and VxFlex storage-only nodes with NVMe.

NVDIMM data compression is supported on VxFlex hyperconverged nodes and VxFlex storage-only nodes.

Two-layer

Separates compute resources from storage resources, allowing the independent expansion of compute or storage resources.

Consists of VxFlex compute-only nodes (supporting the SDC) and VxFlex storage-only nodes (connected to and managed by the SDS). Compute-only nodes host end-user applications. Storage-only nodes contribute storage to the system pool.

Hybrid hyperconverged

Consists of hyperconverged, compute-only, and storage-only nodes. Some nodes contribute both compute resources and storage resources (hyperconverged nodes), some contribute only compute resources (compute-only nodes), and some contribute only storage resources (storage-only nodes).

Microsoft Windows-based compute only Consists of VxFlex compute-only nodes (supporting the SDC) on Microsoft Windows 2016 Standard/Datacenter. Compute only nodes host end-user applications.
Storage-only VxFlex integrated rack

Consists of nodes that contribute storage resources to the virtual environment. The back-end traffic shares the same VxFlex OS data networks. The storage-only VxFlex integrated rack provide volumes to an external customer compute limited to Dell EMC PowerEdge servers.

No SDC components are installed on these nodes.

Two-layer storage-only shared deployments use the same two VxFlex OS data networks for both SDC and SDS communications. This deployment type allows rebooting of VMware cluster nodes without VxFlex OS ramifications.

When designing initial deployment or specifying later growth, use hyperconverged nodes if both compute and storage nodes are needed. You can add compute-only or storage-only nodes as needed.

To control the number of processors or cores, consider separating the compute for the application from the nodes that support storage. This deployment is a pure two-layer deployment. Extra workloads are supported or added using hyperconverged or two-layer compute-only or storage-only nodes. This creates a hybrid deployment.
